If Zab is injured or suspended
|
Who will step in ? Can see who would . Reid played at right back at the start of his WH career but is still a few weeks away None of our midfield could, maybe Rice at a push but then we lose his qualities in midfield. Cresswell has played there I remember but then that would mean Masuaku playing at left back and a totally one footed player at right back. Ben Johnson is the U23's right back but I'm sure he couldn't step up. Again maybe Oxford could play there or even Josh Pask. We're a bit screwed if Zab is out

Out of the two games remaining this week I’d rather Zaba played Saturday against Palace.
That’s not to say we can afford to underestimate Cardiff but frankly Zaha is more of a threat that any player in their side.
If Oxford can’t even make the squad at a time like this then it really is curtains for him at this club. Given he could be CB cover if we went 3 at the back and played Antonio & Masuaku at WB or maybe could slot in at RB himself.
Pelegrini has his work cut out, typical West Ham that Fredericks would do himself in as a substitute AND cresswell would go down with his hamstring yesterday limiting options further.

So maybe it will be Antonio. 'm sure the coaching staff will have been working with him on playing in that position so it'll be interesting to see how he copes. Would it be tempting fate to say "Thank god it's only Cardiff"?

Noble has had a month off with his suspension and the international break so should be fresh for the Dec games. Obviously he can alternate Wilshere in for some.
I’d expect Antonio might play Tuesday and Zab be saved for Zaha on Saturday v Palace. Hopefully we can keep everyone fit and have some options to shuffle players between now and New Year.

Or Antonio. Pellegrini loves an attacking wing back....

I also don't think Noble can do 3 games in 7 days. Think Obiang may start instead against Cardiff.

No way Zabaleta will play today and then against Cardiff and Palace in the next 7 days. See he left Diangana out of the squad completely as well to give him a breather. Will need them and Carroll & Wilshere to freshen the team up over the Xmas period.

Pelle has said that Antonio may be needed to cover at the back in an interview last week

Not sure El Pel at left back is going to work.

Another yellow card for Zaba today, his 4th, which I think makes him one off a suspension. For whatever reason, he's not going to be able to play all the remaining 6 matches this month. I still have no idea who's going to play at RB - I hope Pelle does. We've got decent cover in all other positions.

Bilic's attempt to turn Antonio into a full back was half-arsed.
IF Pellegrini decided that he'd try and do the same thing, he'd make a better go of it.
But I don't think he'll make that decision.

Play 3 at the back... not a problem then...

I should point out I was joking about Antonio.
But Then Again...
I don't actually see markedly better options, ha!
Although Rice is a good enough BALLER to deputise for anyone across the back if we are absolutely bereft of any other option.
COME HOME GLEN JOHNSON!
(I'll stop now.)

Can't believe some are calling for Antonio at RB. Basically, if you think of Masuaku's ineptitude against City and double it, that's how good Antonio is as a full-back.

Ive heard good things too, apparently he's mustard.

Antonio is NOT the answer to the RB position. Cant believe it is even being suggested. It was one of the reasons the guy started to get worse and everybody here wanted him out of RB while screaming for Bilic to open his eyes! Antonio is completely incapable of defending.

Well, Pellegrini's mantra thus far has been to make use of the next youth player off the rank so to speak when the squad is short.
I don't know our academy prospects well enough, but hopefully one of them could step up.
Makasi, Pask, Oxford or Johnson?
'Ex' the other day was suggesting Antonio might soon be returning to the role..I certainly hope not as he's about as effective defensively as Masuaku, but with less of the diligence or desire.
